In Ontario, Canada, my national and provincial associations do salary surveys. The provincial association also recommends an hourly rate for a private practitioner. I looked at all this info, considered my geographical location and surveyed my colleagues to get a sense of what to charge.

This sounds just like me. I want to start my own so bad, but I'm so afraid, and don't know how to get started. The Medicaid (new rules) and insurance side of things makes me so nervous! Are there any websites that offer assistance in the 'how to' of Medicaid/insurance billing?

I also really enjoy working in cognitive rehabilitation and have found that there are many people who would benefit from therapy. I am an OT and enjoy reading your blog. Thanks for sharing

Great question.
I believe it was around 30-40 respondents. Not a huge N - but hopefully my 2012 survey will reach a larger audience!

I work with adults as a contract PT. Personally I prefer khakis and knit shirts instead of scubs. To me scrubs feel to much like pajamas and if I am in pajamas I am not as productive. I also find that to be true of many of my patients too. For my patients that are able which is really most of them, I tell them that they get to keep their pjs on the first week but after that they need to wear their street clothes. They are so surprised how much better they feel when they wear regular clothes. Just my two cents!

Hi Julie!
Great question. Yes, the book does discuss being a sole proprietor (DBA) vs. and LLC but peoples circumstances vary.

Of course I have to preface this by saying that I'm an SLP and not a lawyer, but in general I advise people who are working part-time, for themselves (by themselves) and treating patients in the patients homes to start out as a sole proprietor.

If you have employees, office space or are treating patients in YOUR home, there is more liability and you'll want to become an LLC.

Either way, you'll need professional liability insurance :-)

Hope this helps!
Jena

P.S. I'd love to learn more about you and your private therapy goals and ambitions!

Hi, Do you discuss which type of business label is most suitable for the practice? For example, LLC versus another type?
Thanks!
